It's
a Wonderful Town - brash, noisy and buzzing with energy. New York is
simply the most dynamic city you are ever likely to visit.
The sights are must-sees and so well known they roll off the tongues of
people who have never been near the place. The Empire State Building,
Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, Greenwich
Village and Chinatown - the list is endless. Take in a Broadway show,
shop at Bloomingdales or Macy's on 34th Street and enjoy fast food
where it is served best. But don't miss the point.
Bite into this Big Apple and at the core you will find a city which is
really all about the streets and the people who bring them to life. Even
within the USA, New York is utterly unique. When you first arrive it is
strangely familiar - until you realise that you have walked into a real
live movie set. Yellow taxi cabs, the Statue of Liberty, dimes and
nickels, Broadway...You expect to bump into Woody Allen or Robert de Niro
in the street. The city oozes atmosphere - exhausting maybe, exhilarating
probably, but certainly never dull.
Sightseeing
For distinctive sights the Big Apple competes with anywhere: the Statue of
Liberty, Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Rockefeller Centre, World
Trade Centre... Several of the museums are conveniently close together, in
an area alongside Central Park, called Museum Mile, including the famous
Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. Unusual and worthwhile are
the Round Island Cruise and an unforgettable helicopter flight over
Manhattan.
Shopping
Macy's (the largest department store in the world) is on 34th street and
there are many reasonably priced shops in that vicinity. Classy
Bloomingdale's is the centrepiece of Fifth Avenue with lots of designer
shops and the famous toy store FAO Schwarz. For trendy and off-beat styles
try SoHo.
Wining & Dining
Finding a place to eat is never a problem in New York - every other
building seems to scream "PIZZA" at you. In fact the fgamous New
York neighbourhoods probabaly offer more variety than anywhere. In the
downtown districts of Little Italy and Chinatown you can immerse yourself
in another culture and cuisine. Greenwich Village remains an attractive
Bohemian area with funky restaurants and real pubs, even if the Upper West
Side is more in vogue. As all hotel arrangements are room only you could
eat breakfast (NY bagels are a must) somewhere different every day.
Getting Around
Not far in miles, but it takes on average about 45 minutes to travel
between midtown Manhattan and either Newark or Kennedy airport. Road is
the only option: taxi is at least $30, bus is $17. Prices one way. Within
Manhattan, the subway is convenient, inexpensive ($1.50 a ride) and,
generally , safe. If you are exploring you can enjoy the frenetic
atmosphere better on foot. Taxis are well priced - a typical 10 minute
midtown journey is around $5.
